In 1998 owner, Stuarts wife, Helane was diagnosed with diabetes, a disease that requires a whole lifestyle change when it comes to eating. Unfortunately, none of the large supermarkets where Helane shopped carried very many things she could eat.

After a few months of watching his wife's frustration of trying to find foods low in sugar, Stuart saw an opportunity.  Diabetes was on the rise and there was no store in the market catering to those who had the disease. So, he sold his Times Square Convenience Store and in 2000 opened Sugar Free Xpress at their current 1,500 square foot location in Yonkers.
